Zingiber spectabile (Beehive Ginger)
The Classic Beehive Ginger
Zingiber spectabile, commonly known as Beehive Ginger or Microfono, is native to Malaya and one of the classic beehive-style gingers — prized for its honeycomb-like, fragrant yellow and orange flowers and genuinely ornamental foliage. A mounding, compact plant reaching around 0.6 to 1.5m in height and spread, it flowers from around July through late November.
Growing Conditions
Light: full sun to semi-shade.
Water: regular, consistent watering — preferably with plain water rather than heavily treated tap water, to avoid disturbing the soil’s pH over time.
Cold tolerance: mature plants show genuine hardiness in cooler conditions, tolerating brief dips into the low single digits Celsius given some shelter from harsh wind and cold. A layer of mulch helps insulate the roots and retain moisture through cooler spells.
Feeding: fertilise regularly to support healthy, vigorous growth.
Great in Pots
Zingiber spectabile grows well in a container, provided it still gets plenty of water — a good option if you want the flexibility to move it to a more sheltered position when needed.
