Vietnamese Gardenia (Gardenia vietnamensis)
Heavenly Scent for a Mission Beach Garden
Few things capture that resort-style tropical feel quite like the scent of gardenia drifting through the garden on a warm Mission Beach evening. Vietnamese Gardenia delivers exactly that — strongly fragrant, creamy white single flowers, around 8cm across, held beautifully against deep green, semi-glossy foliage. Plant one near a patio, an entrance, or under a bedroom window, and let the fragrance do the work.
The Easiest, Hardiest Gardenia We Grow
Plenty of gardeners are a little wary of gardenias, put off by their reputation for fussiness — root rot, powdery mildew, stem canker, bud drop. Vietnamese Gardenia is different. It’s genuinely the easiest and hardiest gardenia in our range: it handles moist soil far better than most gardenias, is quite drought tolerant once established, and shows strong resistance to the typical gardenia problems that put people off the whole genus. It’s also, hands down, the most cold hardy gardenia we grow.
Growing Conditions
A vigorous evergreen shrub with a lovely dense, rounded form, Vietnamese Gardenia grows to around 1.8m in height and width, flowering more or less throughout the year in the right conditions — a genuinely long season of that famous fragrance, not just a brief spring flush.
- Soil: well-drained, organically rich and acidic
- Water: moderate — avoid overwatering
- Light: good light boosts flowering, though it appreciates some afternoon shade
- Airflow: good air circulation helps keep pests at bay
- Pruning: shape after flowering to maintain its neat, rounded form
Also Suits a Pot
For anyone in a cooler climate, Vietnamese Gardenia makes a fantastic container plant, letting you bring that fragrance indoors when the weather turns.
