Heliconia Tropifleur

If there is one heliconia to recommend to someone planting their first tropical garden, it is Tropifleur. This compact Heliconia psittacorum x spathocircinata hybrid distils everything that makes the psittacorum group so beloved — near year-round colour, easy temperament, generous flowering — and adds a toughness that larger, more demanding heliconias rarely match.

Wind, which is the undoing of many tropicals, barely troubles it. At two metres it presents a manageable, well-proportioned clump that fits where the bigger heliconias cannot, holds its ground in exposed positions, and produces flowering stems in a size perfectly suited to cut flower arrangements — not so large as to overwhelm a vase, not so small as to be lost in one. It is, in the most practical sense, a beautiful plant.

The flowers themselves carry the vivid tropical colouring the psittacorum group is known for, and they come reliably and repeatedly through most of the year, which means there is almost always something worth cutting or something the sunbirds and honeyeaters are working. As a screening plant it builds into a dense, attractive barrier that earns its keep even on days when it isn’t actively flowering.

Its cold tolerance is genuinely impressive for a heliconia. Established plants will handle the occasional dip to around five degrees, and in a warm, sheltered microclimate it will grow as far south as coastal Sydney — a reach that opens this plant up to a far wider range of Australian gardeners than most heliconias can claim. It also performs well in a large container, making it accessible to those gardening on balconies or in courtyards where ground planting isn’t possible.
