Tiger Grass
Looks like bamboo, but it’s actually a giant clumping grass — no branches, just leaves running straight off the culm, topped with grass flowers each year. Tiger Grass grows to around 3-4m and can’t be trimmed shorter, forming a lush, vase-shaped clump of large tropical green leaves.
A fantastic addition to a tropical garden, or a genuinely effective wide screening plant. The natural clump footprint is around 1m, but it can be planted into narrower beds down to 50cm provided there’s air space above for it to fan out naturally. For screening, plant Tiger Grass the same distance apart as your available bed width — an 80cm-wide trench means planting 80cm apart for a dense screen.
Extremely quick growing, reaching full size within 18-24 months (or faster with a more established starting size). Low maintenance and drought tolerant once established, though it looks its best with regular water through dry periods.
