Alpinia zerumbet (Shell Ginger) — Bare Rooted, Pack of 5
In a cooler climate, Alpinia zerumbet is one of the best tropical plants going. In spring and summer, it puts out long sprays of sea shell-like flowers that elegantly drape from the plant. The lush emerald green leaves emit a scent when rubbed, evocative of edible ginger — and in some cultures, the leaves are traditionally used to wrap fish before cooking.
An easy-growing, vigorous clumping perennial, reaching 2.5 outdoors (more compact in a pot or greenhouse). Thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil, full sun to part shade — afternoon shade is worth giving it in hotter climates. Feed and mulch through the growing season for the lushest growth, and prune stems right to the ground occasionally to encourage fresh new shoots.
Shell Ginger is often used mass planted to hold banks as it’s a vigorous grower that can supress weeds.
