Far North Queensland’s Most Elegant Native Palm
There is something quietly magnificent about Normanbya normanbyi. The Queensland Black Palm is a palm of the Daintree rainforest — native to the wet tropical lowlands of Far North Queensland, growing along rivers and creeks and in the steamy humidity of the rainforest understorey — and it carries that origin in every detail. The trunk darkens almost to black with age, smooth and closely ringed, topped with a pale green crownshaft and a full, plumed head of narrow leaflets arranged circularly around each leaf stalk in a manner strikingly similar to the Foxtail palm. Slender, elegant and unmistakably tropical — this is a palm that screams Far North Queensland in the best possible way.
A Better Palm for Smaller Gardens
Where the Foxtail palm is the crowd favourite, the Black Palm offers something more refined and considerably more flexible. The trunk is more slender, the overall silhouette less dominant, which makes it a more versatile choice for smaller gardens, courtyard plantings and mass planting schemes where the Foxtail’s bulk would be too much. Plant five in a grove and the effect is one of the finest things you can do with a tropical garden.
Wildlife It Attracts
Cassowaries love the fruit, which tells you something about both the ecological value of this palm and the neighbourhood you’re gardening in if you’re planting it on the Cassowary Coast. It’s also a significant plant for native bees, making it one of the more ecologically generous palms you can put in the ground in the wet tropics.
Conservation Note
Normanbya normanbyi has a restricted natural distribution and is listed as vulnerable under Queensland’s Nature Conservation Act. Growing it in cultivation is a small but genuine contribution to keeping this extraordinary palm in the landscape.
This listing is for five nursery-grown plants, propagated here at El Arish on the Cassowary Coast where the Black Palm is entirely in its element.
