Pseuderanthemum graciflorum

Winter is the lean season for nectar feeders in the tropical garden, which is exactly why Pseuderanthemum graciliflorum earns its place. While most of the garden is between flushes, this reliable shrub comes into its own — producing a generous display of lavender-pink flowers through the cooler months that honeyeaters and other nectar-feeding birds will find and work thoroughly.

It’s a plant that gives you something to look at all year. The foliage carries a warm purple-bronze flush, particularly on new growth and in good light, adding depth and richness to a mixed tropical border even when it isn’t flowering. The overall effect is lush and full without being coarse — this is a shrub that looks deliberately planted, not just filled in.

Growth is vigorous enough that it establishes quickly and fills its allotted space without a long wait, but it responds well to pruning if you want to keep it compact or shaped. Left to its own devices it builds into a useful mid-storey shrub — good for softening fences, filling gaps in a mixed planting, or anchoring the middle ground of a border where you want something with substance.

It’s genuinely unfussy in the wet tropics and warm subtropics — give it reasonable soil, moisture while it establishes, and a position where it gets some sun for best flowering and foliage colour, and it largely looks after itself.

A natural companion for other winter-interest plants — plant it alongside winter-flowering heliconias and gingers to keep the garden alive with colour and movement through the cooler months, and your honeyeaters will thank you for it.
