Pepper Vine (Piper nigrum)
A Must-Have for the Tropical Foodie
Piper nigrum produces our common eating pepper, and it’s a genuine must-have for any tropical gardener with an interest in food. An extremely vigorous grower over summer, generously producing peppercorns you can harvest yourself — a real step up from anything store-bought.
From Vine to Spice Rack
Immature fruits can be picked and used as green pepper. Black pepper is the dried fruit with the skin left on, while white pepper is the dried seed with the skin removed — meaning one vine gives you three genuinely different products depending on how you harvest and process it.
Black pepper is the world’s most widely traded spice, but once you’ve tried the sharp, strong taste of fresh-picked pepper, you won’t want to go back to store-bought — which is often harvested up to a year before it even reaches Australian shelves.
Growing Conditions
Pepper vine can be grown south of Brisbane, but will need to come indoors or be kept in a hothouse over winter in cooler climates.
