The Palm That Defines Tropical Luxury Landscaping

Walk through the grounds of any prestige resort or architecturally considered tropical garden between Cardwell and the Daintree and you will find Cyrtostachys renda. The Lipstick Palm is not merely a feature plant in Far North Queensland’s finest landscapes — it is a signature, the single plant that more than any other communicates that a garden has been designed with genuine tropical intent and the confidence to match.

The crown shafts are the reason. That saturated, lacquered red — so vivid it reads almost as deliberate provocation against the deep greens of a tropical planting — is unlike anything else in the palm family. Paired with the clean, ringed trunks and bright green fronds of a mature multi-stemmed clump, it creates an effect that resort designers, architects and prestige landscapers return to again and again because nothing else quite replaces it.

At Home on the Cassowary Coast

Mission Beach, Wongaling, Bingil Bay, El Arish — this stretch of the Cassowary Coast sits in arguably the best Lipstick Palm climate in Australia. The heat, the rainfall, the humidity — Cyrtostachys renda is not merely tolerating these conditions, it is revelling in them. We grow ours here on the Cassowary Coast where they colour up beautifully and establish with the unhurried confidence of a plant in its element.

For landscapers and developers working in the Mission Beach corridor, Cairns, Port Douglas or the broader wet tropics region, this is the palm your clients will recognise from the world’s finest tropical resorts — and the one that will define the character of a prestige garden for decades.

What It Needs

Cyrtostachys renda is a plant that rewards those who meet it on its own terms. Consistently moist, rich soil, genuine tropical heat and humidity, and shelter from cold and drying winds are non-negotiable. South of the wet tropics it becomes a difficult proposition; in the right climate it is simply magnificent. Enquire about trade and bulk pricing for landscaping projects.
