Heliconia longa
A Bold Feature for the Wet Tropics
Heliconia longa is a large herbaceous plant, well suited to genuinely tropical conditions, with thick, trunk-like pseudostems formed by tightly packed leaf sheaths. Its long, wide leaves resemble banana foliage, with a green upper surface and a distinctive white waxy coating underneath — a lovely contrasting detail that catches the light as the leaves move.
Long-Lasting, Striking Flowers
The pendulous flower spikes can last for months once they emerge. Bright red bracts and rachis carry the true flowers — small, yellow and tubular, mostly tucked away inside the bracts themselves. Genuinely long-lasting colour that gives real, sustained impact in the garden.
