Where Costus barbatus commands attention from a distance, ‘Green Mountain’ works its quiet magic up close. This compact hybrid spiral ginger — a cross between Costus varzeanum and Costus productus — brings something most costus cannot offer: genuine foliage interest that earns its place in the garden even when it isn’t in flower.
The leaves carry a rich purple reverse that catches the light as they spiral up the stem, lending the whole plant a warmth and depth that reads beautifully against the greens of a tropical planting. Then come the flowers — small, cheerful bursts of orange that appear with the same easy generosity characteristic of the best costus, and are entirely edible, sweet enough to scatter through a salad or lift a plate as a garnish.
Smaller and more refined in habit than Costus barbatus, ‘Green Mountain’ fits where the larger spiral gingers cannot — at the front of a border, in a contained bed, or massed as a lush, colourful groundcover that suppresses weeds and looks considered rather than utilitarian. It fills space willingly without overwhelming it, which makes it one of the more versatile costus for gardens where scale matters.

We ship to QLD, NSW, ACT and VIC via Australia Post eParcel with tracking on every order. Flat rate shipping applies — see checkout for rates to your state. We are unable to ship to WA, SA, TAS or NT at this time.
When We Ship
Orders are picked and packed weekly. During extreme heat, we may hold your order for a cooler shipping window to protect your plants in transit — if this happens, we'll let you know via email. We don't ship into known heatwave conditions.
When Your Plants Arrive
Open your box as soon as possible. Even a few hours in a hot letterbox or on a doorstep can stress tropical plants. Give them a good drink of water and a light foliar spray of kelp solution, place them in a shaded spot for a day or two gradually increasing light to recover from transit, then plant out or pot up into their permanent position.
