Bold, Easy and New
Not every collector plant makes you work for it. Colocasia esculenta ‘Lemon-Lime Gecko’ is a recent introduction that brings something genuinely fresh to the tropical aroid palette — large, dramatically mottled leaves in chartreuse and soft green, the variegation distributed with the casual, living randomness that no two leaves ever quite repeat — and then proves disarmingly easy to grow.
In the tropics it stays evergreen year-round, building into a lush, substantial clump of bold foliage that earns its place in the garden through every season. The colouring is the thing — that bright, luminous chartreuse reads as a beam of light in a shaded planting, lifting everything around it, and placed against darker-leafed tropicals — deep green heliconias, purple costus, black-stemmed aroids — the contrast is immediate and striking.
Containing the Enthusiasm
‘Lemon-Lime Gecko’ is vigorous, and that vigour is worth planning for. A large container keeps it at its most manageable and most dramatic — the restricted root run concentrating its energy into producing the best possible foliage rather than spreading. Better still, plant it at the margins of a pond or water feature where the water provides natural containment, the consistent moisture suits it perfectly, and the reflection doubles the effect of those luminous leaves. It is one of the better arguments for a pond that we know of.
For the collector building a serious aroid collection, this is a variety worth securing while stock is available.
