Cocoa Tree (Theobroma cacao)
Grow your own chocolate — the pods on this genuinely fascinating tree contain 20 to 60 cocoa beans each, the raw ingredient behind chocolate, cocoa powder and cocoa butter. Tiny pink-white flowers grow directly from the trunk and branches, followed by large pods ripening from yellow through to deep purple.
An understorey tree in its native Amazon and Orinoco rainforests, cocoa wants warm, humid, tropical conditions and bright, indirect light or partial shade — a genuine talking-point plant, and a rewarding one for anyone with an interest in growing what they eat.
