Browneopsis ucayalina
An Amazing, Genuinely Rare Collectible
Browneopsis ucayalina is an amazing collectible — sought after and genuinely hard to find anywhere. Native to the lowland rainforests of Ecuador and Peru, it’s related to Maniltoas and Browneas, but stands apart with its own distinctive character: a small tree with leaves carrying an attractive camouflage pattern of maroon and light green.
Foliage That Changes as It Grows
New growth emerges pendant — drooping softly — before slowly becoming erect as it matures, with leaves deepening to dark green over time. That shifting habit, combined with the camouflage-patterned foliage, gives this tree real, ongoing visual interest well beyond its flowers.
Flowers and Form
Reaching 5 to 15 metres in the wild with a compact, rounded crown, Browneopsis ucayalina produces reddish-pink flower clusters — smaller than its Brownea relatives, but genuinely attractive in their own right, held in terminal or leaf-axil clusters.
Growing Conditions
- Light: full sun to partial shade — flowering is best in sun
- Soil: deep, rich, slightly acidic, well-drained, high in organic matter
- Water: keep consistently moist — this tree does not tolerate wind or drought, and dislikes drying out
- Humidity: prefers warm, humid conditions
- Feeding: benefits from seasonal fertilising
A Genuine Collector’s Piece
Between its rarity, its striking camouflage foliage, and its distinctive flowers, Browneopsis ucayalina is exactly the kind of plant that makes a tropical plant collection genuinely special. If you love hard-to-find species, this is one worth seeking out.
I only have a few of these to sell, they’re in 120 mm pots.
