Aphelandra hartwegiana (Yellow Aphelandra)
Striking spikes of yellow flowers emerge from bold orange bracts, blooming in succession over many days for a genuinely long-lasting show — and a real magnet for birds in the garden. Large green leaves develop a subtle reddish tinge along the midvein in bright light, adding another layer of colour beyond the flowers themselves.
A welcome winter flowerer, filling that quieter stretch of the garden calendar with genuine colour when many other plants have slowed down. Here on the Cassowary Coast, sunbirds are never far away in winter, and this is exactly the kind of flower that keeps them visiting through the cooler months.
A tough, easy-growing shrub for bright shade to full sun in warm climates, reaching around 0.6 to 1.5m. Suits garden beds, pots, or a smaller garden space, and responds well to the occasional trim to keep it bushy and encourage fresh blooms.
