Variegated gingers are always in demand, and this is one of the best of them. Alpinia oceanica ‘Variegated Form’ takes a bold, architectural species from the islands north of Australia and dresses it in dramatic streaks and sectors of cream splashed across broad green leaves — no two leaves marked the same, every stem a one-off.
The species itself is a substantial clumping ginger, building into a lush stand of upright leafy canes that reads as instant tropics in the garden. The variegation is what lifts it from handsome to head-turning: against the deep greens of a tropical planting, those pale-striped leaves glow, catching the eye from right across the garden. It’s the kind of plant visitors stop at and ask about.
Grow it as you would other large alpinias — rich, moist, well-drained soil, plenty of mulch, and protection from harsh afternoon sun, which suits the variegated foliage best in filtered light or morning sun. Like most variegated plants it’s a little slower than its plain green counterpart, which is part of why it stays scarce. Shelter from wind will keep those big painted leaves looking their best. It’s a warm-climate plant at heart; in the subtropics give it a protected, humid corner, and in cooler areas treat it as a large container specimen you can move under cover.
Use it as a feature clump where the foliage can be admired up close, to brighten a shaded green corner, or as the standout in a collector’s ginger bed alongside costus, tapeinochilos and the rarer alpinias.
We propagate this one in small numbers here at El Arish, and variegated stock is always the first to sell out.
