Zingibers, or Beehive Gingers as they are often called can make excellent landscaping specimens in tropical,subtropical and even Sydney gardens. Zingibers are native to southern and south east Asia. With the highest concentration from the tropical and subtropical areas of southern China and Thailand.
Size wise they are generally between 30 cm and 180 cm tall. Inflorescence are produced basally and in rare cases terminally. Beautiful day flowers resembling small orchids are produced daily for months.
The most common beehive that is cultivated ornamentally is Zingiber spectibile. The honeycomb flowers resemble beehives and are produced prolifically. Often with clumps containing 50-100 flowers. There are early and later flower varieties that can be combined to give tropical gardeners beehives for 9 months of the year.
There are also deciduous varieties that are perfect as filler plants or for temperate tropical style gardens.
In general you’ll find they grow best in rich, well drained soil in partshade. In winter they may rot if over watered. We sell small bared rooted plants rather than rhizomes as beehive gingers don’t always have a 100% strike rate from rhizome.

The Yellow Green Beehive is the most commonly cultivated of all beehives. It tends to flower late in the season and has quite large flowers. The flowers start out yellow and get larger and redder with age. If you are a novice grower this is a good beehive to start with. It makes an excellent landscaping plant and a good cut flower. One of the better growing beehives for cooler climates as it is a very robust grower

Smaller attractive beehive with deep chocolate flowers and brown stems. The latest to flower of the beehives and a good filler plant. Has also marketed as "Cocoa Delight"
Open clean bright yellow bracts that age to bright red. Early flowering. One of the best cut flower beehives.

Beehive gingers flower from the base of the clump. In a small area there can be over 100 flowers. Generally while most beehives start out yellow or apricot they will go red with age.Champagne is slightly smaller than other beehives. It is the first to flower and has pretty apricot flowers. In general beehives make great landscaping plants, Champagne is no exception. The flowers can also be used in arrangements and are long lasting. Easy tp grow and cold hardy excellent plant for novice growers.

Darwin Chocolate Beehive Ginger was bred over 20 years ago by the Darwin DPI for the NT cut flower industry. It starts out with a lovely bright yellow top and ages to a deep chocolate brown. Great cut flower and a talking point for your garden.
