Aroids are the workhorses of a tropical garden. Bold leaves, exotic form, and a range wide enough to fill almost any position you’ve got.
The aroids we grow include alocasias, colocasias, philodendrons and more. They belong to the Araceae family, grouped together by the structure of their flowers rather than their appearance, which is why the family looks so varied.
Most have rhizomes or tubers, though philodendrons don’t. Leaves are the main draw — often colourful, and on some species over a metre across.
The versatility is what makes them worth having. Colocasias will grow in water, so they suit pond margins and boggy ground. Philodendrons climb happily on palms and tree ferns for vertical planting. Some are semi cold hardy, dying back in winter and reshooting from the tuber in spring. A few are edible.
We’ve expanded our aroid range recently. They deserve a place in every tropical garden, and there’s an aroid for almost every spot in one.
